Slayer 04:11
Slayer, tooth decayer on a prayer that was answered On a high horse, or a racecourse in flames, and flooded with answers But will my young heart beat a false start? I'm a jogger whose eyes are turning I'm a here now and I know how Oh, my heart is yearning Day on day... You're a talker, she's a walker yeah, there's two kinds of people one half, have heart the other part lie in a field of dead dreams, oh And now the rent's due, and I have to siphon off a living in this cruel world which was hurled out into space and spinning Day on day... Now it's late fall before nightfall yeah, I go out walking Over dead leaves in my blue jeans and my long sleeves with their stitched seams And the streetlights, they shine so bright I wonder what they could show me It's a long freeze and I do believe we could all go without warning Slayer

Will you love me, will you love me, at the end of the tunnel above me? Will you love me, will you love me, at the end of the tunnel above me? At the end of the tunnel, I hope... At the end of the tunnel, I hope... Will you love me, will you love me as much as the sun above me? Will you love me, will you love me as much as the sun above me? At the end of the tunnel, I hope... At the end of the tunnel, I hope... Who-who-who, who's that knocking? There's always a salesman knockin’ with a suitcase full of ashes, asking me about my gashes. Who-who-who, who could that be? Circling round me at the intersection will the road shine in all directions? At the end of the tunnel, I hope... At the end of the tunnel, I hope... At the end of the tunnel, I hope... At the end of the tunnel, I hope......... And human eyes can peek, and human eyes can pry and human eyes survey the roadside, watch it roll by... And everything is soft, and everything is sweet then everything gets hard, and it gets mean, Oh, look at me! And human eyes can know, only so much sky and human eyes still tear up, when it's time to say goodbye (Singing) Will you love me? Will you love me at the end of the tunnel above me? Will you love me? Will you love me at the end of the tunnel above me? At the end of the tunnel, I hope... At the end of the tunnel, I hope... That if I've been good... That if I've been good.... That if I've been good..... At the end of the tunnel, I hope that you love me

Don't take it all at once bit by bit please bit by bit that way, it lingers on the tongue like a sweet dream like a sweet... a little sleep is what I need it's what I need say, swan king you're standing in the snow and your footprints, they look like ghosts and swan king looks back straight at me and says "hey sweet thing, don't you know? that it's time time you catched your breath, stow it in your heart, tie it to your wrist time you catched your breath” time you catched your breath time you catched your breath swan king, teach me how to write in a straight line, in this strange life hey kid, no more regrets straighten up your back there you got the hang of it time you catched your breath time you catched your breath (x3) time you catched your breath time you catched your soul welcome home, hello

Jesus locked in the basement of an arcade Jesus locked in the basement of an arcade Jesus locked in the basement of an arcade Oh the games, the children play And I don't pretend to love you, I just do And I don't pretend to love you, I just do And I don't pretend to love you, I just do Still it's slightly scary when there's nothing there to hold on to So, I try to be a lifeboat but the kids these days wear spikes and chains I ask mom what's for dinner and she says you, she says it so plain that she might not be joking... Dear mom's never been one to kid So I go violent dancing, when I need to get off the grid I go violent dancing, throw the world's weight off my shoulders I go violent dancing, throw the world's weight off my shoulders I go violent dancing... THE CLOUDS ARE SPRAYPAINTED SHUT AND IT'S NOT ALLOWED THE CLOUDS ARE SPRAYPAINTED SHUT AND IT'S NOT ALLOWED THE CLOUDS ARE SPRAYPAINTED SHUT AND IT'S NOT ALLOWED AFTER YEARS OF WAR, THE SKY IT CORKSCREWED AGROUND If I only had a skateboard, I could sell it and buy stock for free I would make myself an army of commas and apostrophes but this country's not that gentle and we use far too much gasoline Astronomers are dying, it's time to set priorities I'll buy toys for the children, but who will give them food to eat? I protest where we're going, but who's got the chords and who's got the beat to compete in this market? I peek inside to see who's home Cos when I go violent dancing I prefer to not go alone I go violent dancing, throw the world's weight off my shoulders I go violent dancing, throw the world's weight off my shoulders I go violent dancing, throw the world right off my shoulders I go violent dancing, throw the world right off my shoulders And my heart, it It is shattering like glass Every time I turn my head, my neck it seems to snap right back There's better ways to spend my time There's penguins and there's crocodiles You build a saddle and you ride away At the end of the day Hurry up, there's not much left Hurry up, there's not much left Hurry up, there's not much left...

There's lightning all around me There's lightning all around me There's lightning all around me, I sing out and I can see you I see you I see you There's lightning all around me, There's lightning all around me There's lightning all around me, I sing out and I can see you I see you You're something I like to see And I'm not alone I'm not alone I'm not alone There's lightning all around me, I sing out and I can see you I see you You're something I love to see And I'm not alone I'm not alone I'm not alone There's lightning all around me, I sing out and I can see you I see you I see you I see you I see you

Rainbows 03:20
and I am such a fool, a fool when I am this happy the sky, it was blooming like the eyes of a child that was slightly polluted wave to me, when you go by I mean no harm, nor ire this day's so sweet, like chocoleet... so sweet and so fantastic and I am such a fool, a fool when I am this happy and I believe in you oh, I believe in you oh, I believe in you what else is there to do? and on the way home the way home the way home the way home there's rainbows there's rainbows there's rainbows there's rainbows! and I, am such a fool a fool when I am this happy

1, 2, 3, 4! You were sketching mirrors, I was planting sky Underneath the cherry tree On the 4th of July You threw the mountain sideways And tossed the earth up straight And like a dog you caught it in your mouth To celebrate your life! Flirting with disaster Two weeks in a row A policeman's body Trapped inside a painter’s skull And we may meet in darkness For the rest of our days And our mouths may hang open Even when we've met our graves Then our jaws fall right off our faces And I will sip the morning, I will sip the morning, I will sip the morning Till it's afternoon Then I will sip the afternoon Until that I see the moon And then I will Hooooooowwwwwwwwwlllllllllllllll... Summertime is coming I feel it in my bones My babyhair still growing And my skeleton of bones I wanted to get healthy So that you'd notice me I wanted to escape the coast guard Pretending I was sea I was not But someday, maybe..... So please, Don't be scared. Of what you See out there Which way you turn My friend You're weaving around Like a bird I know to some It sounds absurd You're weaving around Like a little bird I know to some it sounds absurd Yeah And all I want All I want is what is true All I want All I want is what is true And I see the TV I see the talk shows with no sound I see the stars at night Even when they're not around There's blossoms beside me They're still there when the song ends I find work at the factory At the gate where the city ends I make pianos, I make pianos, I make pianos... And I see behind me I see the bandshell draped in black But now it's morning And the traffic's starting back I see all these streetsigns That I've never seen before I'm on my way to work today Don't want to work there anymore

As a boy I would stand in awe of the sight of the band criss and crossing the land, the lights and the clapping of hands As a boy, as a boy, as a boy I see things As a boy, as a boy, as a boy I see things And I'm throwing pennies that belong to the bank of your heart, the bank of your heart I wish it could be mine Later on as a man I'm doing the best that I can I imagine your lips, my hands on the side of your hips As a boy, as a boy, as a boy I see things As a boy, as a boy, as a boy I see things And I'm throwing pennies that belong to the bank of your heart. the bank of your heart I wish it could be mine... IN LOVE Picture you naked with a pen and an eraser and a piece of paper down by the equator Hopping atop the backs of giant alligators, rifling through craters, I work as a waiter So I would wait up till the streetlights luminated, our bodies gyrated neon entertainment And I'll keep some for now and save the rest for later, rumbling radiator, peaceful gladiator.... You're my baby, you're my baby You're my baby, you're my baby You're my baby, you're my baby You're my baby I sing cause I'm in love Undress you in my mind and press your breasts to my chest our arms intertwine, yeah I can feel your caress A game of pick up sticks with sweet and sultry whispers You're rubbling on my whiskers, I'm blowing on your cinders And we can laze all day, trade kisses in the park, yeah till long after dark, yeah kindling and spark, yeah And it's a great big world and there's no way around it, I've been looking for a cure and just maybe I found it You're my baby, you're my baby (x3) You're my baby I sing cause I'm in love Picture you naked with a pencil and some paper and a new eraser down by the equator And I would shiver I would shake and I would grin, yeah You tell me that I'm thin, yeah but it's the skin I'm in, yeah Shimmy down your street till I reach your apartment, dance across your floor and waltz across your carpet And it's a great big world and we all stand atop it, Love is the glue that keeps all of us from falling off it You're my baby, you're my baby (x3) You're my baby I sing cause I'm in love You're my baby, you're my baby (x3) You're my baby I sing cause I'm in love... I sing cause I'm in love

Emancipation 03:55
And that one got away And this one it did not And that one it was cold And this one it was hot And this one walks that way And that one only jogs And this one only works No they never seem to stop And this one likes to breathe They do it all the time And that one likes to grieve I see it in their eyes And this one never healed And that one never hurt And this one wears a tie And that one wears a skirt And this one always leaks And it drives the neighbors mad And this one always beeps When the smoke comes off the pan And this one likes to sleep Yeah, they always stay inside And this one likes to speak A din of chatter in their mind And this one breaks away All that's left is just a chain Just a chain, just a chain Ah-hah-uh Fire, fire, fire Emancipation Liar, liar, liar This is out nation Fire, fire, fire Emancipation Liar, liar Oh – The thing you threw away Is now what you need the most You stumble with the words With which once you used to boast In the corner of your eye You catch your longest lock of hair It's twisted off the side And it feels like it could tear The pleasantries are done Your shoelaces untied The tender part of skin Stitched and sutured long the sides In the corners of your eyes All that's left is just a chain Just a chain, just a chain Ah-hah-uh Fire, fire, fire Emancipation Liar, liar, liar This is our nation Fire, fire, fire Emancipation Liar, liar, liar This is.... And I can't see too well See you too well now But I will ring my bell Ring it far and LOUD And all your strings are pulled Pulled and cut away As autumn leaves, they fall That one got away... The sound of Fire, fire, fire Emancipation Liar, liar, liar This is our nation Fire, fire, fire Emancipation Liar, liar, liar This is our nation Fire, fire, fire Emancipation Liar, liar, liar This is our nation Fire, fire, fire Emancipation Just a chain, just a chain Of wires

You're my baby boy, You're my catholic smokering... It's not a religious thing but that is the way it sounds So be it I spend a lot of time listening to the ground and the bees and the birds If I could show you how much I............. (l o v e) You're my New Orleans You're my New Orleans You're my jumping beans It's past midnight now and the angels gathering But I'm stubborn so I slow down When people love, People sing Yeaaaa..... You're my baby boy, You're my catholic smokering... When I turned 27, I turned 1

All Night 05:32
All night, all night I hear them calling outside, outside it sounds like they’re humming the song you sing when you know that you’re gonna die On my back looking at the stars oh my god, my god, how did they get so high up there? they shine like something shines when it knows it’s gonna die For the birds, the birds, the birds and children, these words, these words, I move to be near them - the sound that strong things make when they know they’re gonna die The moon, the moon, she knows all our secrets but still she shines so beautifully on the sea, yes, oh, I thank you for gracing me with your light through my darkest times Come dog, come dog, let me throw you a bone, yes, I’m growing old and I can’t throw so well but I hope that you don’t mind my friend, oh, I know you don’t mind There’s a tree on my block where the birds rest from flight when the sun goes down on them what a sight, yeah, goodbye to all of you my friends may you fly for many more miles You were born with an old man’s face looking for the proof and every path that you take led right back to you and I was impatient, I botched the equation I lost my arithmetic book and there I stood and I shook until the awe overtook Grandma, Grandpa I send you this love, yes, this song that you can take on your voyage wherever you wind up my friends, I hope you have a wonderful time Blow wind, blow wind, blow one more time on my face, my skin fill my lungs with one last breath – And with it all I thank you and I let go of this life and with it all, god, I thank you this gift – this song to say goodbye…

about

For The Birds and Children is a record Inspired by the frenetic and peaceful, set on clipped waves and uncertain times... An old frayed map by candlelight, intended to take listeners along on a journey from warm pads, through the backstreets in early morning hours and out into the wild spaces.

In a wounded world, I hope this album is a poultice and a salve.

This album was conceived in Brooklyn, somewhere off the Ft Hamilton Parkway in late 2005 and recorded over the course of a few years. It's not exactly the record that I set out to make but hopefully it will allow people to form a relationship with the songs.

Most everything on here was recorded into a field recording microphone and DAT recorder in various locations around the city. What you're hearing here are good takes and not unlike what it would be like to see me perform live. Except maybe a bit more humble and relaxed. :)

I would like to thank my parents and grandparents as well as my extended family for their support and encouragement (as well as their understanding of my stubbornness). I'd also like to thank a lot of other people for helping me along with this record, thinking back.....Brian Geltner, Thomas Bartlett, Kenny Seigal, Dawn Landes, Diane Cluck, Shahzad Ismaily, Dougie Bowne, Casey Holford (who rescued I C U Thru Lightning from nasty clipping), Andy Biscontini, Michele Leavy, John Kazar Asare, Arianna Stolt, Brendan Fallis, Daniel Otero, Monique Srur, Chad Dugas, Matthew Lombardo, Ivan Sandomire, Danica Novgorodoff, Daniel Greenspan, Gregory Singletary, David and Anne Garland, Timmy Gallogly, Timothy and Kathy Dick (and Auld Lang Syne), Will Shwartz, Daniel Bateman, Ian Lotto, Vin Cacchione & Soft Black, Hillary Huffard, Tim Luntzel, Nino & Jessica Pinelli, Fred Varnis and the mighty Eric Lippe.

Thank you for your friendship, love and support... for putting me up when I was broke, forgiving me when I was foolish and encouraging me when I was losing my way.

Much love,
Dave

–––––––––

Thank you, dear listener, for coming to this album.

For The Birds and Children marks the first official release in an ongoing project to preserve and forward Dave's wondrous body of work.

Despite being a prolific songwriter, constantly recording and performing for nearly 20 years, Dave never formally released an album during his lifetime. In forwarding his music, we are following his spirit, working to trace the winding and branching paths he often followed in crafting each collection of songs. Whether you're an old friend or a new initiate to Dave's diverse tribe, we hope you'll come along with us on this journey.

My meager credentials as Dave’s mother could have not carried me very far toward this release without the help of his friends who contributed not only recordings but their time and talents to this effort.

Most profound thanks to Kelly Craven, Vincent Cacchione and James Key for their pivotal work on this album... Also to David Garland, Peter Himmelman and Rob Martin for promoting Dave in their own inimitable ways.

I am truly humbled by all who have donated to this project, financially or otherwise, and for the ongoing support and friendship of so many... Special thanks to Joe Lambert, Danica Novgorodoff, Brendan Fallis, Diane Cluck, Dawn Landes, Diana Zinni, Lisa Alter, Shara Nova, Ac Sapphire, Stéfan Christoff, Deidre Locklear, Soleil Chappelle, Matthew Psyllos, Abby Noyce, Gryphon Rue, Danielle Garber, Thomas Bartlett, Brian Speaker, Andy Biscontini, Danny Greenspan, Dan Costello, Sara Fox, John Kazar Asare, Kenny Siegal, Paul Szynol, Joseph Sant, Seth Faergolzia, Shahzad Ismaily, Alec Bemis, the Lewis family, Abbey Todras, Verna Larsen, Magali Charron & Alaska, Sonny Fedrigon, and the late Anne Garland who continues to inspire... I hold you all in my heart.

With love and appreciation,

Stella (and Gene) Deporis
